2007 Digital Double for Cambrian!

Cambrian Printers pick up two awards for digital printing

Cambrian Printers has succeeded in securing two highly coveted printing awards for their digital printing. Winner of the Digital Printer Awards 2007 – Marketing and Collateral Category and the winner of the British Book Design and Production Awards 2007 – Digital Award, Cambrian reinforces its position as a leader of UK digital printing.

To accompany the award entry, the company presented their own brochure as an example of the diverse printing capabilities of the digital printing facilities of Cambrian Digital, the digital division of the Aberystwyth based Cambrian Printers. The brochure was designed, printed and finished in-house to demonstrate the features, effects and substrates that digital printing can support. The judges were suitably impressed on both occasions with comments from the judging panel for the Digital Printer Awards including “a showcase piece for high quality printing”.

With the Digital Printing Awards being held for the first time this year, Cambrian Digital is particularly delighted with their win. “It’s fantastic to know that we’ve won the first ever award for marketing and collateral with the Digital Printer. The technology we’ve invested in here at Cambrian rivals the traditional printing techniques offered by litho and enables customers to print a short run of printed materials very quickly.” comments Clive Evans, Press Room Manager at Cambrian Printers. “The value that high quality digital printing can add to any project is enormous. A broad range of substrates are possible to process which gives designers and clients access to an increased range of visual effects. Our award winning brochure is one example of how we can print on foil, acetate, 100% recycled and a vast range of paper and card. We’ve asked customers to compare a page within the digital brochure with an equivalent lithographically printed page and 9 out of 10 couldn’t tell the difference!”

Cambrian also secured the win for the best digitally designed and printed book at the British Printing Industries Federation British Book Design and Production Awards 2007. Judges commented that the brochure presented by Cambrian Printers “showcases to maximum effect the possibilities of digital printing”.

Commenting on their success, Carrick Wilkie, Sales Development Director commented: “2007 has been a spectacular year for Cambrian Printers and these wins confirm our position as a market leader within the UK. Cambrian Digital is a fairly new division within the company so it’s very reassuring to be recognised as industry pace-setters”.

The HP Indigo 5000 offset digital press at Cambrian Printers offers a host of printing solutions for customers including variable data for personalisation of printing. Digital printing is largely chemical and solvent free; fewer materials are consumed in the make-ready stages – making it a sound environmental choice for clients. The quick turnaround time and fantastic range of printing options makes digital printing at Cambrian the ideal choice for all printing requirements – from students’ dissertations through to business cards or even wedding stationery – there’s something for everyone!

2007 Major Industry award for environmental commitment

Cambrian wins major industry award for environmental commitment

Cambrian Printers has secured what can be claimed as the highest industry specific accolade for their commitment to the environment. During a glittering award ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel Cambrian Printers were announced as the Print Week Environmental Company of the Year 2007.

Presented with the award by Print Week Editor Daniel Danielli and comedian Jon Culshaw, was Carrick Wilkie, Sales Development Director who commented, “This is the greatest accolade we’ve ever received and a pinnacle in the Company’s history. We take great pride in our work and the awards we’ve secured in the past; however this is the one award we’ve always aspired to win and sets us apart as leaders in our industry.”

Dubbed the Oscars of the printing world, this was the first time for Cambrian to enter the Awards. The judges’ commentary referred to their success as being unsurprising considering the company’s wealth of accreditations and awards, “Cambrian Printers jumps straight to the head of the line this year, picking up the environmental gong on its first attempt. Those in the know will not be surprised however, as this family-owned printer has been at the forefront of all things green for many years, as attested to by its raft of accreditations and awards”.

“We’re delighted,” commented Robert Read, Company Chairman and Managing Director of Cambrian. “This is a huge award for us which really puts us at the forefront of our industry. We’ve taken major steps to improve our performance as a business and have considered the environment as a core part of this long term strategy. We’ve made savings in terms of technology and equipment, making sure we reuse and recycle where possible. We’ve also been creative for example introducing an interest free loan to staff for bikes as a carbon neutral way to travel to and from work and introducing a wormery to cope with our canteen waste!”

“Receiving such an award is the best recommendation we could ever receive and I consider this accolade to be the greatest amongst the Print Week Awards. We currently print a range of publications on behalf of clients who consider our commitment to the environment and sustainability as one of the main reasons for doing business with us. This award just proves we’re the leaders on a UK scale and is a fantastic boost to our team.”

Cambrian Printers currently hold ISO14001, ISO9001, Green Dragon Level 5, PEFC and FSC chain of custody certification. Other awards recently won by Cambrian Printers include BPIF Excellence Awards 2007 Environmental Category (Highly commended); Print & Paper Monthly People in Print Awards 2007 – Editor’s Environmental Award; Arena Network Energy Management Award (Highly Commended); National Recycling Awards 2006 – Best Industry Recycling Initiative; Green Apple Environmental Awards 2006 – Wales Green Champion; Ceredigion Business Awards 2006 – Best Large SME.

2007 Cambrian set sights on FSC stock as standard

Cambrian Printers set sights on FSC stock as standard

Cambrian Printers has committed to FSC-accredited paper as part of its green agenda. The paper, supplied by Howard Smith Paper Group, will now be the standard stock for the Aberystwyth-based printer. The paper will not be charged at a premium. The company hopes to offset this both through keen negotiations with Howard Smith and the added appeal of the FSC badge to potential customers.

Cambrian commercial manager Martin Koffer said: “With the ever-increasing emphasis on green issues, more and more of our customers are under pressure from their own subscribers and end-users and have been asking us what they can do.

“When we reviewed our paper supply contract, we made this a key consideration. The new contract put in place means that by printing with us, our customers will be able to give their own customers the assurance of an FSC product, and use the FSC logo on their publications.”

The near 150-year-old company boasts a range of other green credentials, such as PEFC certification, ISO 14001 and Green Dragon Level 5 status. It recently became one of six printers awarded a pan-European print contract by the Environment Agency.

2007 Cambrian supports Trees for Life

Cambrian supports Trees for Life

Cambrian Printers are continuing to maintain reducing our impact on the environment through the planting of trees with Trees for Life, a charity committed to restoring the Caledonian Forest in the Highlands of Scotland. We will continue our target of planting 1000 trees over five years, on behalf of all our customers. The principles of Trees for Life’s work, and support of woodlands and the wildlife that live in them, compliments Cambrian’s commitment to reducing the impact of our processes.

Trees for Life is a pioneering charity in ecological restoration. It aims to restore the Caledonian Forest to an area of 1,500 square kilometres in the Highlands west of Inverness. Today only 1% of the original Caledonian Forest remains. Moved by the plight of this ancient forest, Trees for Life began work in 1989 to help it regenerate and expand again. Initially concentrating in Glen Affric, the largest area of least-disturbed forest in Scotland, they now work throughout a region of 2,370 sq. km in the north-central Highlands, within which they envision restoring a natural, wild forest to about 1,500 sq. km. In the longer term, they also advocate the return of the missing wildlife species, as they are essential parts of the forest ecosystem. 2007 Top accolades for environmental performance

Cambrian Printers receive top accolades for environmental performance

Cambrian Printers is celebrating having once again been recognised for our commitment to environmental protection and promotion – winning two top awards and being highly commended in a third competitive industry award.

We were recently crowned a “Green Hero” by the Green Organisation and awarded with a Green Shield by Prof. David Bellamy – a further tribute following their identification as Wales Green Champion in the 2006 Green Apple Awards. The Green Organisation is an independent environment group dedicated to promoting the positive side of environmental endeavour and works across public and private sectors. Carrick Wilkie, Sales Director, collected the Green Shield from David Bellamy at the Kensington Roof Gardens commented “We’ve worked hard to ensure that our environmental performance is a core part of our business practices, achieving praise from environmental leaders such as the Green Organisation is further justification for our continued efforts in minimising our impact on our local and global environment.”

The second of our awards came in the form of an Editor’s Environmental Award at the People in Print Awards 2007. Cambrian triumphed in scooping the prize for the Environmental Award having “integrated its work with the environment into all facets of its management and production processes… Cambrian Printers, a company that is an exemplary illustration of how printers can be successful but still work with the environmental as core drive within business.”

The highly coveted award was presented to Carrick onboard the Silver Sturgeon river boat on the Thames. In receiving the award Carrick commented “We’re very proud of this award. Receiving such commendation is fantastic – particularly as we’re aware that this category is highly contested within the industry.”

Cambrian Printers has been diligent in ensuring their commitment to the environment and integrating sustainable business practices and holds full compliment of accreditations to support their Environmental Management System. These include ISO 14001, Chain of Custody from the Forest Stewardship Council and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification and Green Dragon Level 5 – the only UK Printer to hold all accreditations.

Cambrian Printers were also highly commended in the environmental category of the British Printing Industry Federation Excellence Awards 2007. Another industry led and highly regarded awards ceremony saw Cambrian being recognised for its commitment to environmental sustainability.

Robert Read, Company Chairman and Managing Director said “We’re constantly reviewing our business practices to ensure that we not only remain competitive in the business sense but progressive in our environmental sustainability. Making a series of small changes to our business, for example introducing a wormery or implementing a central vacuum system, all adds up to ensure we’re taking great steps forwards in our environmental practices. These accolades, both industry specific and open to all, have recognised our continued commitment to our environment and ensuring that our ecological footprint, as a business, is minimal.”

2007 New Digital brochure launched at London Book Fair

Cambrian Digital launch new brochure at the London Book Fair

Cambrian Digital launched a new digital brochure at the London Book Fair this month, getting an impressive response from prospects. “There were people coming up to the stand having heard about the brochure, wanting to have a look” says Carrick Wilkie, sales development director, “we have had very positive feedback and have already gained a new customer this week”.

Cambrian Digital was at the book fair as part of the HP Indigo stand, in order to further promote our services and the benefits of digital printing. Not only is the printing quality excellent, but there are added benefits such as the ability to create personalised, unique, targeted material and the ability to print on a wide range of substrates including recycled paper, foils, acetates, and art paper. Our digital press has the ability to print special effects such as HP Digital Matte, which gives an effect similar to that of Spot UV or Varnish. We also offer various finishing options to a high standard.

“We wanted to create a brochure that showcases everything that is great about digital printing and what we can realistically achieve and offer our customers” says Glenn Sherwood, Business Development Executive “it is important that potential customers can actually see the benefits that could be added to their projects, the business opportunities it could open up for them as well as the cost and material savings. Digital printing does bring many advantages over traditional methods, for example it can offer distinct benefits in production turnaround, and meeting time sensitive deadlines. The operators running our equipment are very skilled, and on many occasions digital and litho print can be of equal quality. However, we are mindful that there are some jobs that dictate we continue to print them litho”.
