Paper weights are quoted as grams per square metre (gsm). Generally cover board is 200gsm or over, and text paper weights range from 50gsm (book wove type paper) to 170gsm (heavy paper for top quality brochures).
The approximate weight of a publication can be calculated based on the trimmed size, the number of pages and the gsm of the text and cover stocks. The calculator below makes this calculation.
Height and width are in millimetres, and 2% is added to the final item weight to allow for ink and glue (this figure is an approximation).
The figures which appear as a default in this calculator show an example based on an A4 publication, 64pp + cover, printed on 90gsm text paper with 200gsm cover board.
